Storms hit Canadian LPG

Western Canada's production of ethane and other NGLs is still recovering from the closure of six major straddle plants in the Empress area of Alberta province,which was hit by a tornado on 21 June.The plants - operated by BP,ConocoPhillips,Atco and Encana - extract NGLs from the natural gas pipelines moving through the area.The incident left some Canadian petrochemical plants scrambling for feedstock.Nova Chemicals declared force majeure on ethylene,hydrogen and polyethylene from its Joffre,Alberta manufacturing site,as it receives about 50pc of its Alberta ethane from the Empress plants.Of the straddle plant operators,ConocoPhillips was hardest hit,sustaining extensive damage to the cooling tower at its 2.4bn ftVd unit.
