Effort, PA - Big Brown Fish Hatchery and Fish and Pay Lake has been a family operation for three generations. Present owner Charles Conklin says he was 12 when he got started in the business. "My dad (Charles Allan Conklin) took me to buy 100 fish," he said. "I wouldn't sell those first fish, they all had names." Conklin finally agreed to sell his first fish and from the proceeds he got some money and 1,000 new fish. He started to buy and sell fish like that every year and he's been at it ever since. Conklin was never able to sell his favorite fish, "Big Brown" (named after the company). "I had that fish for five years," he said.
