Merger results in new name for vaccine makers

Two international vaccine producers recently finalized a merger with the, announcement of a new name - Alpharma. The merger, which was announced last fall united A.L. Laboratories of Fort Lee, New Jersey and Apothekernes Laboratorium A.S. of Oslo, Norway. The new organization brought together two of the world's major producers of fish vaccines, Apothekernes Laboratorium A.S. of Oslo, Norway and Biomed, Inc. of Bellevue, Washington. Biomed, Inc. was launched in 1972 by Dr. John J. Majnarich in Seattle, Washington, as a family-owned biotechnology business. In the firm's early years, Biomed helped develop one of the first commercial veterinary biologic products, a new technology for vaccinating salmon against Vibrio anguillarum by immersion in a killed bacterin.
