Maine and New Brunswick will be using different compounds to treat sea lice. While hydrogen peroxide is approved on both sides of the border, only asamethiphos is approved for use in Canada and cypermethrin can only be used in Maine, McGonigle said that cypermethrin was given a "compassionate INAD" (Investigatory New Animal Drug) approval last year in the States. The approval expired in January, but he is optimistic it will be approved again in March. He said the efficacy trials done last year with cypermethrin on Maine salmon farms showed the drug to be very effective.
