What is it that makes the UK one of the leading countries for designing and developing sports cars? We may not have the technical efficiency of Audi and BMW, nor the outright machismo of Ferrari and Maserati, but, once these are discounted, a huge amount of work is being done by medium or small sized developers producing low volumes of quirky, powerful and ultimately beautiful roadsters - TVR, Morgan, and many others, Even the Marcos is making a hugely welcome comeback. Whilst owned by one of the large conglomerates, and not strictly covered by the description above, Jaguar owes just as much to its sporting heritage in the UK as the others. The cars it produces retain the company's distinctive styling, and the interior quality and ride remain just as impressive (perhaps more so, as much of the appeal of the old UK sports cars used to lie in their brutal handling on the open road - although, I believe, that is no longer the case).
