The Limousin breed is celebrating its 40th year in Australia and New Zealand. The start was a little different in each country, but closely linked. In the early 1970s New Zealand was able to import live animals from France and the UK via the Somes Quarantine Station on an island just off the New Zealand mainland. Australia could import semen from the UK and Canada, but could notimport live animals from Europe until the early 1980s. The first shipment of 10 Limousin heifers from France arrived at the Somes Island in 1974. The first sale of fullblood Limousin was in New Zealand in late 1975 with very keen interest from Australian buyers who were able to import live animals from New Zealand.
