Landscape ecology is a relatively new and rapidly growing discipline. Drawing on expertise from numerous other ecological fields and utilizing novel techniques, landscape ecology has provided insight into difficult questions from a wide range of spatial and temporal fields. Perhaps as a consequence of this diversity and generality, landscape ecology has remained difficult to define and theory unique to landscape ecology has proved elusive. Lingering questions include: What is Landscape Ecology? How is landscape ecology different from ecosystem or community ecology? What theory and techniques are unique to landscape ecology? What questions can landscape ecology answer that other ecological disciplines cannot?
