On July 9, 2007, when Arnold Palmer, Carl Pettersson and Lonnie Poole stepped onto a temporary tee box on top of a small hill on Centennial Campus and hit golf balls deep into the overgrown pasture land, it marked the official beginning of one of themost anticipated projects in North Carolina State University history. "This is a day that we at NC State have longed to see," said Chancellor James L. Oblinger. The trio — along with 500 or so NC State staff, donors and dignitaries — gathered within view of the Raleigh skyline on that sweltering afternoon to officially begin construction on the Lonnie Poole Golf Course, a par-71, 7,100-yard layout nestled on 200 acres in the southeast corner of Centennial Campus.
