Next on the list of top survival strategies after personnel and pay issues, 28 of the 45 drilling contractors mentioned they were still discounting rig rates in an effort to satisfy customers, in addition to being flexible with terms and conditions. "We have been very fortunate because some of our customers have signed long-term contracts with us," an ArkLaTex driller remarked. "We had to reduce our rates from $15,500 to $12,500, but we both got something out of it. It was a 'win-win' situation."
