Latshaw Drilling acquires Keen Energy Services, emerges as No. 2 private driller by fleet size

The ranks of midsize drillers belonging to publicly traded corporations just shrank by one, while one midsize, privately held Midcontinent driller just doubled in size. Tulsa-based private contractor Latshaw Drilling has closed its acquisition of Keen Energy Services, headquartered in Stillwater, Oklahoma, from NYSE-listed Leucadia National Corporation. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed. Latshaw noted that the combination will result in a fleet of 41 drilling rigs and 1,000 employees, making it the second largest privately owned drilling contractor in the U.S. The biggest private driller, according to our July 2012 analysis of the rig fleet, was Oklahoma City-based Cactus Drilling with 59 rigs.
