AC Rigs of ≥1,500 hp Outpace Same-Size Rigs of Other Power Types, but Smaller AC Rigs Lag

A comparison between new wells drilled and the type of rigs used to drill them clearly illustrates the efficiency improvements realized by operators drilling with younger and higher-horsepower rigs. Since the beginning of 2014, wells drilled by AC rigs with drawworks rated to 1,500+ hp are reaching total depths at a pace that on average has been 33% faster than times recorded by mechanical or SCR rigs of similar horsepower.
