By the application of ship manoeuvrability standards good accuracy of ship manoeuvrability prediction becomes necessary for ship hull design. The prediction of manoeuvrability has been performed based on the experimentally obtained hydrodynamic coefficients, which are described by principal dimensions of ships. Hydrodynamic coefficients for recent ships become different from those for conventional ships due to the improvement of hull shape, and it is difficult to describe these only by principal dimensions. Model tests for recent ships, therefore, have been performed in order to obtain their hydrodynamic coefficients, and the new prediction procedure based on these data has been developed. The prediction accuracy of the new procedure is confirmed by comparison with the sea trial results for a 150,000 DWT tanker.
