Most electrical maintenance people know to always expect the unexpected when entering any electrical equipment. "Corona damage is one of the problems that we find on a regular basis," says Chuck Humphrey, president of Highvec Canada Inc. "Because of the byproducts nitric acid and carbon that are produced from the corona discharge, a continuous decay of insulation is taking place, which makes the situation highly unpredictable." Ultrasound detection, UV imaging and IR imaging are necessary prior to the cleaning process. Highvec's equipment and experience allow it to enter areas for cleaning, with no downtime. "We take extra precautions to prevent serious potential hazards such as electrical shock and severe burns, which are the two main safety issues in the business," says Humphrey. "Most of our customers have a million-dollar price tag if their plant goes offline, and that is why we are there in the first place. We make sure we are part of the solution and not part of the problem, i.e., causing a power outage."
