摘要

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is now recognized as a major public health problem that imposes an enormous societal burden for the United States. The prevalence of kidney failure treated by means of dialysis and transplantation, as well as earlier stages of CKD, is increasing and will continue to increase in the future despite the inclusion of a summary of strategies for public health action on CKD published by the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) in Healthy People 2010. CKD is now the ninth leading cause of death in males and females in the United States, reflecting this growing impact on the health and well-being of the US population. In March 2007, seven years after the release of Healthy People 2010, the CDC convened a 2-day conference titled Developing a Comprehensive Public Health Strategy for Preventing the Development, Progression, and Complications of CKD to examine responses to this public health threat and develop new strategies for preventing and slowing the progression of CKD.
