Sasol wants to build 'Secunda-scale' GTL plant in Louisiana

South African GTL specialist Sasol says that it is considering $20 billion of investment in North America over the coming years, with 70% of that cash earmarked for a $14-billion 'Secunda-scale' GTL complex in the southern US state of Louisiana. CEO David Constable said that the group is "driving North American opportunities" to take advantage of low-priced gas for fuel and chemical production. The project would involve building two 48,000 bbl/d GTL trains at the site, with production to begin in 2018. The plants would be based on the same reactor used at the Oryx site in Qatar, but with improved catalyst and internals for greater throughput. The company says that a feasibility study based on a forawrd gas price of $5-6.00/MMBtu was completed in June and a decision to proceed will be taken before the end of 2012.
