On the influence of reflective gain holograms on the dynamics of lasing in a loop laser cavity

Degenerate four-wave mixing in a laser active medium accompanied by a simultaneous writing of transmissive and reflective gain holograms is investigated. The contribution of reflective holograms to the diffraction efficiency is shown to be small as compared with transmissive holograms (with a factor of smallness equal to the dimensionless gain of the active medium G). Different schemes of loop laser cavities are analyzed in terms of differences in the intensities of waves involved in degenerate four-wave mixing. A mathematical model of lasing dynamics in a holographic Nd:YAG laser is used to demonstrate that, even though the diffraction efficiency of reflective gratings is much lower than the diffraction efficiency of transmissive gratings, the former allow the energy parameters of phase-conjugate radiation to be improved by 10-15%.
