The efficacy of integrated pest management (IPM) module and farmers' practice (control) against major pests of black gram (cv. Vamban) was evaluated in Tamil Nadu, India, during the kharif of 2002 and 2003. The IPM module consisted of the following practices: seed treatment, erection of bird perches, installation of pheromone traps against Spodoptera litura and Helicoverpa armigera, use of neem seed kernel extract and Sl NPV/Ha NPV [Helicoverpa armigera nuclear polyhedrosis virus], mechanical management, and need-based application of insecticides. The IPM module significantly reduced pod borer (H. armigera) damage (4.2-10.8%) and pod bug (Clavigralla gibbosa) damage (2.7-5.8%) compared with the farmers' practice (dusting with lindane 1.3 D at 25 kg/ha at peak flowering), which registered higher pod borer damage (5.8-13.8%) and pod bug damage (3.8-7.8%). Grain yield (528-852 kg/ha) and benefit:cost ratio (1.37-2.21) were also higher with the IPM module than with farmers' practice..
