STUDIES ON LATE APPLICATION OF FERTILIZER NITROGEN IN GREENGRAM

A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of top dressing of nitrogen during flowering and maturity stages on pod and seed yield of greengram. Results indicated that over and above the recommended dose of 25 and 50 kg ha~(-1) of N and P asbasal application, top dressing of 10 kg N ha~(-1) once at stray flowering and once at pod development stage should be applied for increased yield. Pulse crops play an important role in Indian Agriculture. Besides being rich in protein, they sustain theproductivity of the cropping systems. In India the area under pulse crops at present is around 23 million ha, with a production of 15 million tones and a productivity of about 650 kg ha~(-1). The country would need at least 23 million tones of pulses by2005 AD and 30 million tones by 2020 AD (Asthana, 2000). There is not much scope for increasing the area under pulses and hence the productivity has to be doubled in the next two decades at the national level.
