Visceral pain in dogs and cats is often difficult to identify because of dissipated pain, hyperalgesia, intensity not correlated with the gravity of the lesions, etc. It is often difficult for the practitioner to sort out the problem. This article provides information to gain a better understanding of visceral pain, which is so very different from somatic pain, its mechanisms, and its effects on the body. An assessment scale based on the symptoms observed, as well as appropriate treatment protocols depending on the intensity of the pain and whether the pain is chronic or acute are presented so that the practitioner can undertake therapy of pain associated with abdominal disorders. Lastly a clinical report is provided as a practical example of the information given.
