Do value chains help farmers out of poverty? Two views.

摘要

Many current global policies propose that farmers can get out of poverty by being (better) linked to markets. The two views presented in this paper (both referring to Ghana and West Africa) answer the question of whether an emphasis on value chain development indeed leads to farmers becoming more entrepreneurial and whether this is the key to poverty reduction in rural areas. One view indicates that developing value chains reduces poverty, while the other suggests that the poorest farmers do not automatically benefit.
