A field experiment was conducted during kharif 2000 to investigate the effects of rhizobial inoculation (using indigenous, indigenous marker and exotic strains) and four P levels (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg P2O5 ha-1) on the growth and yield of French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) in a P-deficient acid alfisol in Himachal Pradesh, India. Inoculation of the location-specific indigenous strain gave higher values for symbiotic parameters (nodule number, nodule dry weight, nodule index), green pod and dry matter yield. The effect of P fertilizer was discernible up to 100 kg P2O5 ha-1. The combination of indigenous strain of Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar phaseoli with 100 kg P2O5 ha-1 gave the highest green pod yield, while the untreated control gave the lowest green pod yield..
