ASCENDANCY OF TEMPERATURE ON POD SETTING IN PIGEON PEA

Ten pollen parents of short duration and thirteen of long duration pigeon pea were used in crossing programme with MS PDT as short and ICP MS 3783 as long duration seed parent between 20th October to 15th December and 12 February to 4 April for shortand long duration group in two crop seasons i.e., 1995 - 1996 and 1996-1997, respectively. In short duration group, pod setting ranged from 72.40% to 74.90 % in 1995 and 71.65 % to 77.45 % in 1996. The maximum day temperature during the crossing period ranged between 20°- 13°C and 17°-11.20°C in 1995 and 1996, respectively. The maximum pod setting 74.90 % and 77.45 % was observed on minimum 15°C and 15.5°C temperature regimes, respectively. In long duration group of pigeon pea genotypes of pod setting ranged from 69.92 % to 83.30 % and 70.85 % to 82.95 % in 1996 and 1997 on minimum day temperature regimes 10°-19°C and 6.5°-18.4°C, respectively. The maximum pod setting 83,30 % and 82.95 % were recorded on minimum 15°-19°C and maximum 25°-35°C day temperature regimes in 1996 and 1997, respectively. Mean variability (+4.15%) in short duration group was low as compared to long duration group (±13 %) for pod setting.
