Information on combining ability is derived from data on seed protein content in 6 lentil genotypes and their 15 F1 hybrids grown during 1991-92 and 1992-93 in Pantnagar. Interactions of GCA and SCA with year were significant. Parents Lens 4136 andPrecoz Sel. had high protein content along with significant GCA effects. The best specific combinations with high mean protein content were Precoz Sel. X Pant L406, Precoz Sel. X Pant L639, Precoz Sel. X HUL12, KL86-2 X Lens 4136 and Lens 4136 X HUL12. Both additive and non-additive gene effects appeared important in the expression of protein content. These crosses may be exploited by harnessing additive and non-additive gene effects through biparental mating in early segregating generations for improvement of protein content in lentil.
