Performance of chickpea cultivars against Helicoverpa armigera (Hubn.) under field conditions in the north central plateau region of Orissa.

During 1989-92, the field performance of 15 chickpea cultivars against H. armigera was investigated in the North Central plateau agro-climatic conditions of Orissa. Borer damage to pods was <13.0% in cultivars PDE2-3, PDE7-3 and ICC506. The geneticresistance of ICC506 was consistent across the years tested. The cultivars PDE3-1, PDE3-2, PDE5-3 and Annigeri-1 had higher yields (1.29 to 1.46 t/ha), even with high borer pod damage (15.3 to 20.4%). PDE2-3 and PDE3-3 were the best cultivars, with yields of 1.45 and 1.51 t/ha, respectively, and pod damage percentages of 12.7 and 14.6%, respectively.
