Padaeng Industry Pcl has announced plans to close its Mae Sot mine in 2016 as the mine reaches the end of its economic life. The company now plans to focus on developing new mines in the region including in Laos and Myanmar. The company has acquired operating rights to a mine in Myanmar, not far from the currently operating Mae Sot mine. Operations at this new mine are expected to begin later in 2010. Padaeng is the only producer of zinc in South-east Asia and silicate and concentrate ores from the Mae Sot mine are the primary smelter feed for the company's Tak smelter.
