Doe Run Peru has reached an agreement with Glencore which will allow it to re-open the La Oroya smelter. Glencore will provide Doe Run Peru with a line of credit which can be used as working capital to restart La Oroya. The smelter has been closed for over a year and its re-opening delayed as the Doe Run has been unable to raise the required funds to pay suppliers and fund the remainder of the cleanup program. The company says it has spent $307m cleaning the smelter already and may need to spend another $150m. It also owes $110m to suppliers.
