Experimental studies were carried out on the response characteristics of a photovoltaic HgCdTe detector irradiated by an off-band CW CO{sub}2 laser. A new phenomenon was observed, which was very different from that in which an 'in-band' laser was employed. Theoretical analysis suggested that the major response of the detector to the irradiation of off-band light is a thermal effect, whereas that of the radiation of 'in-band' light is an optical effect.
