Is the future success of your company based upon being average? As a pundit or journalist, market studies and averages are key bullets in one's holster. Unfortunately, it is easy to be misled by averages and such studies as they often oversimplify and misrepresent very complex issues. A recent study on offshoring released by the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) brings this issue to the fore. It appears to be well documented and researched, and has a variety of expected conclusions, including that globalization will continue, that offshoring benefits both parties and will continue to grow, that standardized jobs are easier to offshore than non-standardized ones, that venturing overseas is risky, and that to be competitive in the new global environment, companies must innovate.
