This autobiography of Gabor A. Somorjai is an extremely interesting book, serving both as the life story of one of the most renowned and impactful chemists in the world and as an enjoyable introduction to the science of surfaces through one amazing chemist's personal experiences. Since research in this field has enabled many of the technological developments that have had the greatest impact on our daily lives (e.g., microelectronics, computers, catalytic converters ..,) and since it is essential to develop needed technologies (e.g., cheaper solar cells, more efficient lighting, fuels production and use with lower CO2 emissions, pollution abatement), I would strongly recommend this book as a great tutorial to an important area of research unfamiliar to most people. It is written in a way that is accessible to a very broad audience, anyone with a scientific or engineering education at the undergraduate level.
