For manufacturers, the difficulty doesn't lie in making one widget or even many in a stable setting. The true challenge can instead be found elsewhere. Manufacturers want flexible and responsive production, so they are able to adjust to changing market conditions or seize new opportunities before they vanish - or simply to effectively manage unscheduled equipment downtime or product recalls. However, manufacturing isn't done without regard for the bottom line. So, producers need to control costs without impacting quality. It is in the balancing of flexibility and responsiveness versus cost and quality where the true challenges arise.
