For scientists one of the recurring characteristic features of the arrival of autumn in the Northern hemisphere is the annual declaration of the winners of the Nobel prizes. This generally produces varied reactions in scientists. There is the slightly negative attitude that Nobel prizes are simply recognition of work carried out several years ago that, although interesting in some sort of historic sense,is now so well established that it doesn't need a Nobel prize to highlight its importance.Another, even more negative, attitude is simply that the hard realities of completing the latest grant application or designing the next crucial lab experiment are such that there simply just isn't time to consider anything else, and certainly not something as abstruse as the winner of the Nobel prize.
