The exact mode of entry of this pathogen into the "clean" barrier room is unknown. Serology obtained from sentinel animals in adjacent rooms was negative for infectious pathogens. Because MHV is a common contaminant of cell lines (10), mouse antibody production (MAP) testing was completed on the injected neuroblastoma cell line; results were negative. The supposed method of transmission in this particular case is believed to involve the contamination of the "clean" room by the principal investigator or his technician. The investigator housed animals serologically positive for MHV in another part of the campus in a conventional animal facility, and transmission and subsequent infection is thought to have occurred between these two colonies.
