New research suggests tinnitus - the annoying ringing caused by inner ear damage - should be thought of as a disorder similar to the phantom pain felt in an amputated limb. Josef P. Rauschecker and his colleagues from Georgetown University Medical Centre propose that peripheral damage to the hair cells in the cochlea causes neurons in the brain which normally receive input from the cochlea to become overactive to fill in the missing sounds.
