There has been widespread concern over the long-awaited proposal from the European Commission that aims to strengthen the protection of animals used in scientific procedures. Despite the Commissions claims that the proposals will improve animal welfare and increase ha.rmonisa-tion across Europe, many have suggested the Directivcwould lead to increased bureaucracy and hamper essential research, with few additional animal welfare benefits.
