Science, engineering, technology, and maths (STEM) subjects are more popular than ever before. The latest data out this month shows they account for 39% of all A-level exams entered in 2015. We've been watching STEM grow its market share for some years now so it is great to see this trend continue. But behind this headline figure we see some cause for concern in the data. For the first time since 2008, biology, chemistry, and physics all decreased in popularity. In fact, it is the maths component of STEM that is driving the overall increase year on year. Maths is by far the most popular A-level with around 11 % of all exam entries being for the subject, up from 8% in 2008. No other subject has changed so dramatically.
