MicroRNA (miRNA) consists of short ribonucleic acid (RNA) se- quences (oligonucleotides), typically only 17-24 nucleotides in length. These sequences were first identified in the early 1990s1 but their role as distinct biological regulators of cell function-was not recognised until 2001-2003.
