Electrochemical techniques in conservation:from transfer of knowledge to the development of new processes

Although electrochemical techniques are typical tools used in the conservation field,they are only rarely employed by the conservators themselves.Considered as dangerous and difficult to handle,mechanical and chemical treatments are preferred.A good control of the parameters applied and the collaboration with experts in the field should assure that the treatment is carried out safely.After a brief historical background on the use of these techniques,this paper presents the key electrochemical parameters useful to conservation professionals.Case studies illustrate the possibilities of these techniques and references are given to the most innovative related works.
