Analytical strategy to identify natural dyestuffs in cultural heritage artifacts The extracts from some plants and animals provide dyestuffs for painting,dyeing and staining of various materials.These natural dyes are widely present in the cultural heritage artefacts.Their analysis and identification can give a lot of information on the geographical origin and the technological development level of ancient cultures.But due to their easy decomposition(ageing)and the extremely small samples available,their identification is difficult.Many analytical techniques were already applied,in particular separative methods because the dyestuffs are complex and composed of many colouring molecules from various families of compounds:high performance liquid chromatography hyphenated with UV-visible or mass spectrometry.The method applied to two dyed wool standards allowed the identification of a compound:the nordamnacanthal.
