In their opportune and comprehensive review, Garcia and Del Brutto updated concepts about neurocysticercosis. As pointed out by the authors, seizures are the most common neurological symptoms associated with the disease, occurring in up to 70% of symptomatic patients. Several mechanisms have been implicated in seizure development in this disease. According to mostresearchers, all these mechanisms are related to the site where the cysticerci are located and to whether or not they are calcified. However, neurocysticercosis might also lead to chronic epilepsy by triggering epileptogenesis at distant sites in other brain areas. Largely ignored in published work, this possibility might be more important than previously suspected and, in our opinion, needs to be considered when concepts in neurocysticercosis are being updated.
