Integrated approaches to paediatric neurocritical care in traumatic brain injury.

In this issue of The Lancet Neurology, Jose Pineda and colleagues report improvements in outcome from severe traumatic brain injury associated with implementation of a paediatric neurocritical care programme. The study was based on a retrospective comparison between patients during two 6 year intervals, before and after implementation of the programme. Implementation of the programme resulted in reduction in mortality from 11% to 3% and in unfavourable discharge disposition (death or to an inpatient facility) for survivors from 52% to 33%.
