We have focused for years on patient safety yet we seem unable to intervene appropriately when healthcare workers take short cuts or fail to treat patients with dignity and respect.Among the most shocking and recent examples must be the so-called care provided by Castlebeck staff at its Winterbourne View site, Bristol. The independent care provider claims to offer assessment, intervention and support for people with learning disabilities, complex needs and challenging behaviour.But according to the BBC Panorama team, which followed up allegations by senior nurse and whistleblower Terry Bryan, clients living at the facility were 'subjected to a regime of physical assaults, systematic brutality, and torture'.
