Nothing about the Obeso family, dedicated to construction and owners of a marble factory, suggested that Jose Angel Obeso (Pepe) would become a doctor. Born in Chambas, Cuba, Obeso grew up in Torrelavega, a small city in northern Spain. The turning point came in high school when—with idealistic fervour—he and a friend decided to study medicine with the aim of helping people in Africa.
