Healthcare reform, health IT, and EHRs: The nurse executive's role.

The U.S. healthcare system has reached a level of criticality in terms of access, insurance coverage, quality, and costs. Despite the highest per-capita health expenditures in the world, U.S. patient outcomes are comparatively worse than those of many other developed countries with much lower spending.1 The 1999 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, "To Err Is Human," examined ways to decrease healthcare errors and enhance patient safety; health information technology (IT), such as electronic health records (EHRs), was advocated as a solution.
