As the excitement of the New Year dies down and we enter a new decade, it is worth reflecting on the progress made by the NHS over the past ten years, when the skills of managers and clinicians to deliver targets and manage pandemics were put to the test. At times, staff were almost overwhelmed by these issues, but they ensured that services improved and, as a result, health care has become more efficient, patient centered and effective. Use of information technology in the NHS increased but there is still much to do, in particular the introduction of electronic patient records across all healthcare settings.
