摘要

It was never intended as a monument. Jay and David Farnsworth bought the Burmese stone statue that stands sentinel in their hallway years ago as a decorative folly for their gracious 1930s home at the foot of the Grampian range in Nelson. But its slightly imperfect, inscrutable carved face has now become a testament to strength and survival. About 13 years ago, the house had to be gutted, rebuilt, re-roofed and redecorated in the wake of a devastating fire. The statue's chipped-off nose - it was probably knocked over during the blaze - is the only visible sign of the ordeal suffered by the house and its occupants.
