CAPE TOWN WAS beset by so much social unrest that photographer Jackie Meiring and her husband Alex would never have contemplated life near the city centre. Their last home in the South African city was a smallish apartment; the one before that a Victorian cottage (a villa to New Zealanders) ornamented with the broekie (panty) lace we call wrought iron, and both were a safe-ish distance from Cape Town's troubled heart.
