ROBYN MCLEAN'S FAMILY home in the Wellington coastal suburb of Island Bay is more than just a house; it's the symbol of a fervent environmental campaign. The family were originally attracted to the "really old, really expensive" villa because it wasclose to the beach, on the flat, relatively sheltered, with a big garden. But they soon discovered that the flea-ridden, borer-eaten old house had become central to an Island Bay community crusade to save the lushly wooded hillside behind it from development and turn it into abush reserve. The villa and a neighbouring house were in line to be demolished to provide an accessway to the 14 townhouses proposed by the developer.
