摘要

Standing on top of a ridge on a chilly autumn day, looking down on the valley that is Eastwoodhill Arboretum, it's immediately apparent why this is one of New Zealand's national treasures. The extraordinary Poverty Bay tree collection is the creationof William Douglas Cook, who was once memorably described as "a plantsman with the soul of a poet and the vision of a philosopher". In autumn the 135-hectare park is a kaleidoscope of orange, purple, bronze and red sparkling in the morning light but just a century ago, when Douglas (as he was known) first travelled here by bullock wagon from Gisborne, the picture was vastly different.
