In the world of published scholarship, the capacity to easily access a systematic count of citations has popularized the citatum index as the primary means of judging the worth of an individual piece of writing and spawned the collective compilation of such counts as the impact factor as a convenient metric for approximating the relative quality of various journals. In an increasingly competitive academic market, scholars are now charged not only with doing excellent work but also with the imperative of demonstrating that their ideas have found an academic home in the most widely cited journals within their field.
