"My baby just fell!" screamed Maria (not her real name), a patient who had delivered by cesarean section 2 days ago. Her nurse ran to her room to find Maria holding her crying baby. "Is he going to be OK?" she asked tearfully. This terrifying question is not one that new mothers expect to ask during their postpartum hospitalization and it's not one that postpartum nurses frequently have to respond to, as falls are relatively infrequent in this population. But as hospitals begin to focus on fall prevention in all patient populations, the frequency of newborn falls has recently begun to be studied along with solutions to prevent their occurrence.
